A shower replacement is the right project when the shower itself has worn out, but the rest of the bathroom is fine. Walls, base, door and fixtures are replaced as one system. Everything else stays where it is.
When Replacement Beats Repair
There is a point where patching stops being maintenance and starts being a habit. The signs are reasonably consistent:
- Staining that no longer cleans up. Not dirt any more. The surface itself has gone.
- A base that flexes when you step on it, which usually means what is underneath has been wet for a while.
- A joint you have resealed more than once. Caulk is a consumable, but the same joint failing repeatedly points at movement or a design problem behind it.
- Staining and discoloring that no longer cleans off.
- An entry that no longer suits whoever uses it, which is a reason to replace even when nothing is technically broken.
A contractor who tells you to replace a shower that only needs a reseal is not doing you a favor. Expect to be told when the smaller fix is the right one.
What Goes In
The base is sized to your opening rather than forced into a standard footprint, and the height of the threshold is a decision rather than a default.
The walls are a solid-surface or acrylic system from Bath Concepts, Luxsan or Pure Stone. These come in a range of stone-look and smooth finishes, install with very few seams, and need no sealing. That last point matters more than it sounds: the most common complaint we hear about an older shower is not how it looks, it is how long it takes to clean.
Doors, fixtures, shelving and any grab bars or seating are chosen to match. Recessed shelving built into the wall system is worth asking about, because it ends the era of the caddy hanging off the showerhead.
What Happens If We Find Something
Older showers hide things. A seal that has been failing slowly for years will have put water somewhere, and it is usually not visible until the old unit is out.
Our rule is simple. If we find damage, you see it before anything is covered back up, we explain what it affects, and any change in scope is agreed with you first. Nobody enjoys that conversation, but finding out on the final invoice is considerably worse.
Cleaning, Afterwards
It is worth being concrete about the difference, because it is the thing homeowners notice most once the work is done.
A solid-surface surround is simply wiped down. Nothing to seal, nothing to scrub, nothing on a schedule you have to remember. Over ten years, that is the part of this project people tell us they appreciated most.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you replace just the shower, without touching the rest of the bathroom?
Yes. That is exactly what we do. The work is contained to the shower, and your floor, vanity and the rest of the room are left alone.
How do I know whether to repair or replace?
Repeated patching is usually a sign the answer is replacement. If the base flexes underfoot, the walls are stained in a way that no longer cleans up, or you have resealed the same joint more than once, the system has reached the end rather than developed a fault. We will tell you at the estimate if we think a repair would genuinely hold.
What if there is water damage behind the old shower?
It happens, particularly where a seal has been failing quietly for years. If we find it, we show you before covering anything, explain what it affects, and agree any change in scope with you rather than discovering it on the invoice.
Why solid surface?
Maintenance, and how long it stays looking new. A solid-surface surround has very few seams, so it wipes down in minutes and keeps its finish. It also comes in a lovely range of smooth and stone-look options, so it looks every bit as good as it is easy to live with.
Can a replacement be done quickly?
These are among the faster projects we do, but the honest answer depends on the existing conditions. We will give you a realistic window at the estimate.
