A tub and shower combo replacement keeps a bathtub in the house and replaces the whole wet assembly around it. For a lot of families it is the practical middle option: the tub stays because it is genuinely useful, but the staining, the failing seal and the cleaning all go away.

Why the Tub Is Worth Keeping

Not every bathroom should lose its bathtub.

If there are small children in the house, a tub is not a luxury. If you wash a dog, you will want one. If this is the only full bathroom in the home, removing the tub entirely can make the house harder to sell later, and buyers do notice.

The common mistake is assuming the choice is between living with a tub you dislike and removing it. Replacing it is the third option, and usually the right one.

We Replace The Tub And Walls Together

The important part of this project is that the tub and the walls are replaced together.

Almost every failure we see in an older combo starts at the joint where the tub meets the surround. It is the busiest seam in the bathroom: it gets splashed constantly, and it moves slightly every time someone steps into the tub. Seal it badly, or seal it onto a surface that was never designed to pair with it, and water finds its way behind.

Fitting a new tub against tired walls leaves that seam in place. So does refacing the walls around an existing tub. Replacing both at once means the waterproofing is designed as a single system, which is the whole point of the exercise.

What You Notice Afterwards

Two things, consistently.

The first is cleaning. A one-piece solid-surface surround has almost no seams, so it wipes down and it is done. This is the thing homeowners mention to us before anything else.

The second is how it sounds and feels. A properly supported replacement tub does not flex or boom when you step into it. An old acrylic tub sitting on a tired base does both, and most people have stopped noticing until it goes away.

The Choices You Get To Make

The tub itself. Standard sizes cover most existing openings. Soaking depth, slip resistance and whether anyone needs to sit on the edge to get in are all worth raising.

Wall finish. Smooth, or one of several stone-look patterns. You will see physical samples at the estimate, which matters: these finishes photograph differently than they look in a room.

Fixtures and diverter. Where the controls sit affects whether you can reach in and start the water without standing in it.

Grab bars. Even for a household with no mobility concerns today, a bar at the entry of a tub is the cheapest insurance in the bathroom, and fitted during installation it anchors into real backing.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why replace the tub and the walls together?

Because the joint between them is where these systems fail. Fitting a new tub against old walls, or new walls against an old tub, leaves the most vulnerable seam in the assembly untouched. Replacing both means the waterproofing is designed as one piece rather than patched at the junction.

Should I keep a tub or convert to a shower?

It depends on the household. Young children, pets to wash, or a house where this is the only full bath are all good reasons to keep one. If nobody has used the tub in years and stepping over the wall has become awkward, a tub-to-shower conversion is usually the better project. We will give you a straight opinion at the estimate.

Can I keep the same layout?

Usually, yes. Most combo replacements go back into the existing footprint, which keeps the plumbing simple and the cost down.

Will the rest of my bathroom be disturbed?

No. The work is contained to the bathing area, so your floor, vanity and the rest of the room stay exactly as they are. That is a large part of why a combo replacement costs so much less than renovating the whole room.

What finishes are available?

A range of smooth and stone-look solid-surface finishes from Bath Concepts, Luxsan and Pure Stone. You will see the actual samples at the in-home estimate rather than choosing from a screen.
